Welcome to our Research Lab

What is CoSSMO?

The Institute for Computer Simulation, Stochastic Modeling and Optimization (CoSSMO) was created in 2013 by an initiative that was strongly supported by CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein (now Emeritus), and Hunter College's President Jennifer Raab and Provost Vita Rabinowitz.

CoSSMO maintains a portfolio of research projects dealing with computer simulation, stochastic modeling and optimization. The focus for the new Institute is on the breadth of applications of stochastic modeling and optimization that are a direct benefit to government and private industry.

CoSSMO's core members and Advisory Board will supervise the balance between the resulting pure research and applied problem solving. Applying research and methods to problems that are of importance in our society helps "make mathematics real" to many students, enhancing their fundamental learning.

The academic disciplines within its scope include: mathematics, computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, geography, business, economics and engineering.

Lei Xie

Dr. Lei Xie is an associate professor in Computer Science at Hunter College and a Ph.D. program in Computer Science, Biology, and Biochemistry at the City University of New York. His research focuses on developing new data mining, biophysics, and systems biology methods for multi-scale modeling of causal genotype-phenotype associations and drug actions and applying them to drug discovery for complex diseases. From 2004 to 2011, he was a principal scientist at San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). Before his stint at SDSC, he worked in pharmaceutical companies Roche and Eidogen to develop enterprise platforms for drug discovery. He was trained in Computational Biology as a postdoctoral fellow at Prof. Barry Honig’s group at Columbia University and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He obtained his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and M.S. in Computer Science from Rutgers University and B.S. in Polymer Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China.

Optimization

Raffi Khatchadourian

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Hunter College and a member of the Doctoral Faculty of The Graduate School and University Center’s Ph.D. Program in Computer Science of the City University of New York (CUNY). My research interests lie at the intersection of software engineering, programming languages, and systems. I investigate how program analysis, automated refactoring, and type theory can ease the burden of correctly, efficiently, and securely evolving large and complex software. I also study how software developers use particular programming language constructs (empirical software engineering) and how software engineering methodology can improve statistical programs and artificial intelligence. My work has been externally supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), Amazon Web Services (AWS), and the Verizon Foundation.

Optimization

Saad Mneimneh

Area of Specialty: Application of mathematical modeling and algorithmic techniques to scheduling, load balancing, and, more recently, computational biology.

Educational Background: Ph.D., Computer Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Research: My research revolves around the application of mathematical modeling and algorithmic techniques to various problems, including scheduling, load balancing, and, more recently, computational biology, especially the issue of RNA interaction and combinatorial problems inspired by it. My work includes complexity analysis, approximation algorithms, game theory/optimal strategies, and lower/upper bounds.

Saptarshi Debroy

I am an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Hunter College, a member of the Doctoral Faculties at The Graduate Center at The City University of New York (CUNY), and a member of the Computer Simulation, Stochastic Modeling, and Optimization (CoSSMO) lab. Before joining CUNY, I was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Missouri (Mizzou). I completed my Ph.D. (2014) in Computer Engineering from the University of Central Florida (UCF). Before that, I received my Master of Technology (2008) from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, and a Bachelor of Technology (2006) from the Institute of Engineering and Management of West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata, India.

Our Lab

The vision of synergy and interaction among researchers is reflected in the open plan of the lab, where students from different backgrounds and levels carry out discussions and share experiences and knowledge.

Our computer lab offers desk space for eight permanent students, three visiting academic Faculty, and several interns that can share six working stations. Interns usually come a few days per week, so we accommodate a convenient space for interaction and teamwork. The lab's design is a modern open-plan office with areas for informal discussions and interactions.

In addition, CoSSMO has a server (Dell PowerVault NX3200 210-ABUN with 16GB (4x4GB) RDIMM, 1600MT/s) and a 10 TB Dell PowerEdge R420 data storage unit that can be accessed from the user's computers to perform regular computations and store data in more minor test problems. We offer students smartphones and tables on loan for special projects to develop prototype apps related to our research.

We provide a microwave oven, a refrigerator, and a coffee machine for them to use. Our space offers a friendly, family-like environment to promote creative thinking in a modern setting.

Hunter College Cyber Security Summer Camp 2018

The program is open to all Hunter non-CS women students who will be sophomores in Fall 2018. No background or experience in cybersecurity or computer programming is needed in order to apply, only your interest and enthusiasm. The program is organized by Prof. Saptarshi Debroy and Prof. Raffi Khatchadourian of the Department of Computer Science, Hunter College, The City University of New York. The program is supported by Women in Technology and Entrepreneurship in New York, Hunter College, and The City University of New York.
